Key takeaways
- PlayStation Game Size posted on 27 October 2026 that Grand Theft Auto VI has a 210GB download on PS5, with preload on 12 November and release on 19 November.
- Insider Gaming said it independently corroborated the 210GB figure. Rockstar Games and Sony have not confirmed it publicly.
- At 210GB, GTA 6 would be roughly double Red Dead Redemption 2's 111GB install on PS5 and more than double GTA 5's roughly 96GB.
- It would be the largest base install for a single-player game, ahead of Call of Duty titles whose 220GB to 234GB totals include the separate Warzone download.
- No reliable Xbox Series X or Series S size has been reported, and a day-one patch could push the PS5 figure higher.
Grand Theft Auto VI is not out until 19 November, but its install size is already part of the conversation. On 27 October, the datamining account PlayStation Game Size posted that the PS5 version has a 210GB download, with preload opening on 12 November. Insider Gaming said it could corroborate the figure. Rockstar Games has not confirmed it, and Sony's storefront does not show a public size.

The number matters beyond bragging rights. A 210GB game changes what owners have to delete, how long they wait on launch night and, for some consoles, whether the game fits at all without an expansion drive. It also says something about the scale Rockstar is shipping. A single-player game that takes more than twice the space of Red Dead Redemption 2 is making a claim about density, cinematics and audio before a single review lands.
210GB is reported, not official
The figure comes from PlayStation Store data surfaced by PlayStation Game Size and corroborated by Insider Gaming. Rockstar and Sony have not published it. The final size may be a download rather than an install, it may change before preload, and it may not include a day-one patch. Treat 210GB as a planning number, not a specification.
What is confirmed and what is reported
The launch details are official. Rockstar's GTA VI page lists 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and Series S, with preload on 12 November for pre-orders. The Standard Edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition is $99.99.
The file size is a report. PlayStation Game Size has a long track record on PlayStation Store listings, and Insider Gaming says its own sourcing matches. That is two independent outlets pointing at the same number, which is stronger than a single leak. It is still not a Rockstar statement, and the figure could move when the store page goes live.
The biggest single-player install
Metro compared the 210GB figure with Rockstar's recent releases. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes up about 111GB on PS5, and GTA 5 is about 96GB. GTA 6 at 210GB would be almost double the former and more than double the latter.
The only console games with larger launch installs are Call of Duty titles. Black Ops Cold War was around 220GB and Modern Warfare 3 around 234GB, but those totals include Warzone, a separate free-to-play component that is bundled into the same launcher. For a game sold as a single-player campaign, 210GB would be the largest base install on current consoles.
That does not automatically make it the biggest game. File size is a product of texture resolution, audio bitrate, cinematic video and duplication used to speed up loading. A studio can ship a smaller world with expensive assets or a larger world with efficient ones. What 210GB does show is that Rockstar is not economizing on the parts of the game that consume storage.

The storage bill
Sony ships the PS5 in three storage configurations. The original launch model has an 825GB drive, the Slim has 1TB, and the Pro has 2TB. A share of each drive is reserved by the system software, so the space available for games is lower than the label. At 210GB, GTA 6 would occupy roughly a third of a launch PS5's usable storage and about a quarter of a Slim's.
The Xbox side is less clear because the size is unknown. The Series S has a 512GB drive and the Series X has 1TB, with the same system reserve. If the Xbox version lands near 210GB, it would take up more than half of a Series S's usable space. That is the console where the install size is most likely to force a choice between GTA 6 and everything else.
The practical answer for most players is an expansion drive. PS5 games have to run from the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 NVMe drive, not a USB hard disk. Xbox Series X and Series S games have to run from the internal drive or an official Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can hold last-generation games, which is a useful way to free internal space, but it will not run GTA 6.
The cost of waiting is another version of the same problem. At a steady 100 Mbps, 210GB takes about 4 hours and 40 minutes to download. At 500 Mbps it takes about 56 minutes and at 1 Gbps about 28 minutes. Those are best-case numbers with no congestion, no store throttling and a wired connection that holds its speed. On launch night, with millions of consoles pulling from the same content delivery network, the real time will be longer.
That is what the 12 November preload is for. It gives players a week to download the game before the servers get busy. Anyone who waits until 19 November is choosing to spend part of launch day watching a progress bar, and anyone on a slower connection may spend most of it there.
Why the number is plausible
Rockstar has spent years building a version of Leonida that is denser than Los Santos. The game has two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, and the trailers have shown a wider range of interiors, crowds and weather than GTA 5. Every one of those elements costs storage. Higher-resolution textures, more recorded dialogue and more cinematic footage all add up.
The install size also reflects the way modern games are packaged. Assets are often duplicated to reduce seek times on mechanical drives, even though both current consoles use SSDs. Audio is frequently shipped uncompressed or at high bitrates in multiple languages. A game with a large story campaign and a detailed open world can reach 200GB without anything unusual in its design.
The comparison with Call of Duty is instructive for a different reason. Those games are large partly because they carry a live-service component that keeps growing. GTA 6 is launching as a single-player game, and Rockstar has not detailed a separate online mode for it. If the base game is already 210GB, the eventual online component would have to be planned around that footprint rather than added to a smaller install.
There is also a platform variable. Metro noted that the Xbox version could be slightly larger than the PS5 build because Sony's console has typically handled data compression better in cross-platform releases. That is a general pattern, not a confirmed number for this game. It does mean the 210GB PS5 figure should not be copied onto an Xbox buying decision without a caveat.
None of this tells a player whether the game is worth the space. Reviews will answer that. The install size only tells them what the answer will cost in storage, and that cost is now known well enough to plan around.
What to watch before 12 November
The first checkpoint is the official PlayStation Store listing. Store pages usually show the exact download size when preload goes live, and sometimes a few days earlier. That is when the 210GB report becomes a specification, and when the Xbox Store is likely to show its own number.
The second is the day-one patch. A launch patch can add several gigabytes, and Rockstar has not said whether the 210GB figure includes one. Players planning to preload should leave headroom beyond the reported size, with room to spare.
The third is the review embargo. Reviews will say whether the world justifies the install, but they will also reveal how the game runs on base consoles. A large install is easier to accept if the frame rate and load times hold up.
Caveats
- 210GB is reported, not confirmed. The figure comes from PlayStation Store data and Insider Gaming's corroboration, not from Rockstar or Sony.
- No Xbox size exists. The 210GB number is for PS5. The Xbox Series X and Series S versions could differ.
- Download and install size are not always the same. Compression, patching and platform packaging can change the final footprint.
- A day-one patch may add storage. Rockstar has not said whether the reported figure includes launch-day updates.
- Usable storage is lower than the drive label. System software and formatting take a share on every console.
- The download-time estimates are arithmetic. They assume a steady connection and no network congestion.
- The launch date and prices are official. The 19 November release and the $79.99 and $99.99 editions come from Rockstar.
The install size is settled enough to plan around. Whether the game justifies it is a question for the reviews.
