Key takeaways

  • Square Enix offered a playable Final Fantasy VII Revelation demo at its Tokyo Game Show 2026 booth, an early-chapter sequence set in the Northern Crater's Whirlwind Maze.
  • The demo made Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine playable for the first time in the remake trilogy and introduced the FITS system, with the roles Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner.
  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

  • Tokyo Game Show 2026 was planned as a five-day, 30th-anniversary event but ran four days after organisers cancelled September 21 as Typhoon No. 25 neared; 257,642 people attended, CESA said.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 gave Final Fantasy VII Revelation its first public playable demo, and the closing chapter of Square Enix's remake trilogy arrived with two newly playable party members and a combat system the studio calls FITS. The demo ran every day of the show at the Square Enix booth at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, where a giant meteor display and the series' photo spots anchored the booth.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches April 8, 2027. The game concludes the remake trilogy that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 and continued with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in 2024. It will also be the first of the three to arrive on every platform on the same day.

A four-day show that was meant to run five

Tokyo Game Show 2026 had been scheduled for September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe, promoted as the event's 30th-anniversary edition and its first five-day run. The Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA), which organises the show, cancelled the fifth day, Monday September 21, because Typhoon No. 25 was approaching Japan. CESA said it put the safety of visitors, exhibitors and everyone travelling to and from the venue first.

The on-site event then ran September 17 to 20 and drew 257,642 visitors, Anime News Network reported. That is a slight fall from the 263,101 who attended the four days of the 2025 show, and the outlet noted the count records a person who attends all four days four times. CESA said a record 1,138 companies and organisations exhibited from 53 countries and regions, and that 3,673 business-matching meetings were arranged, an all-time high. Tokyo Game Show 2027 is set for September 16 to 20 at the same venue.

The cancellation matters for reading the coverage around the show. The five-day format was the biggest structural change for 2026, and the storm took its final day. What was left was still the largest edition by exhibitor count, and Square Enix built its booth around Revelation.

What the demo actually contained

Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show page listed the Revelation demo for all days and described it as a chance to "play through a section of FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION." Gematsu listed the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PC in Square Enix's published line-up.

The playable slice dropped players into the Whirlwind Maze, a desolate stretch of the Northern Crater, as the party follows the black-robed figures who trail Sephiroth. PlayStation.Blog's hands-on report, written by Sachie Kobari, described a party of eight setting out after Sephiroth and a session that ended in a boss battle against a redesigned Jenova. Airship pilot Cid joins at the start of the demo, and both Cid and Vincent Valentine become playable for the first time in the trilogy.

Those two characters were the demo's draw. GosuGamers noted that both joined the party in Rebirth but "remained unplayable until now." Vincent mixes gunfire with a monster transformation. PlayStation.Blog reported that his beast form has no time limit but raises a Chaos level that reduces his maximum HP, so the extra power carries a cost. Cid's spear move-set leans on airtime, with dives and charged spear throws that pin enemies.

PlayStation.Blog also previewed the fight that closes the demo. Tougher enemies such as Dragon Riders and Gigas appear deeper in the maze, and Sephiroth arrives near the end to set up a battle with Jenova, a creature from the 1997 original that returns with what the report called a "sinister redesign featuring an unsettling spiky body."

FITS: four roles, one costume change

The new mechanic is FITS, short for Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear. It gives each character a class-like outfit that changes their abilities. PlayStation.Blog listed four specialisations: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner.

In the demo, Cloud wore the Summoner FITS, which calls Ifrit, Shiva and Titan to fight alongside him for a limited time. Choosing FITS again while a summon is active triggers Pledge Roar, a high-damage attack that drains HP. RPGFan saw the same four roles, with Barret in a Knight outfit and Tifa specced as a Black Mage, and noted that Cid and Vincent started as "Freelancers," their default classes. DualShockers called the system subtle in practice and said it sat in a "happy middle ground" that did not overshadow each character's core kit.

The system is the clearest break from Remake and Rebirth, where party roles were largely fixed. Square Enix's own release materials described it as a way to grant "new abilities and greater heights of power through the specialized roles of Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner." With eight core characters and four FITS each, the mix is meant to give players a wide set of party combinations.

How long was the demo?

Reports on the demo's size differed, and the differences are about session length rather than the build itself. DualShockers said attendees were given 25 minutes and that a Square Enix team member admitted a normal run takes around 35 minutes. GosuGamers put its press session at roughly 20 minutes. Virus played a 30-minute slot on a Switch 2, and Technologist Mag described a 25-minute Chapter 1 demo.

The reason for the spread is that Square Enix ran two kinds of demo in 2026. A longer, open-ended media demo appeared at Gamescom and PAX and put players into Chapter 4 of a world map, while Tokyo Game Show used a tighter story demo drawn from an early chapter. Director Naoki Hamaguchi told VGC that the public demo was "a hyper-focused version of one of the earlier chapters."

Some early write-ups described Final Fantasy VII Revelation as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, reflecting preview coverage written for a PS5 audience. Square Enix's own release notice and its Tokyo Game Show listing both name four platforms, so the simultaneous multiplatform launch is the accurate position.

Release date and a first for the trilogy

Square Enix used the September 3, 2026 PlayStation State of Play broadcast to confirm the date. Its release notice states that FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION "launches on April 8, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and XBOX on PC."

That is a change of pattern for the series. Remake arrived first on PlayStation 4 in 2020, and Rebirth on PlayStation 5 in 2024, with other platforms following later. Revelation ships everywhere on day one. The press notice also lists physical standard, deluxe and collector's editions, a 24-hour early-access window for the digital Premium edition, and a Story Expansion Pass covering two story DLCs planned between winter 2027 and spring 2028.

The timing lines up with an anniversary. The original Final Fantasy VII launched in 1997 and will mark its 30th anniversary in 2027, and Square Enix says the game has sold more than 15.7 million copies worldwide. Revelation is positioned as the end of the project that retells that story across three games, which gives the simultaneous launch a commercial logic as well as a narrative one: a trilogy finale can reach the widest audience on the day it releases rather than in stages.

The director's piano tease and what comes next

Hamaguchi spent the show doing interviews, and one answer stood out because it went beyond the demo. Asked by VGC for something he had not yet revealed, the director said the piano mini-game from Rebirth has been greatly expanded: "You can learn more about Tifa by playing this Piano game." He added, "I'm definitely going to get asked by PR why I just said that, but I want to keep our friendship going!" Steampunk Avenue covered the same exchange and tied the instrument to Tifa Lockhart's backstory in the original game.

“I'm definitely going to get asked by PR why I just said that, but I want to keep our friendship going!” — Naoki Hamaguchi, Final Fantasy VII Revelation director, to VGC at Tokyo Game Show 2026

The DLC plan came up too. Hamaguchi told VGC it was best to imagine the two story episodes "like what we did with Intermission: digging deeper into the characters of Vincent and Sephiroth," without saying whether they are set before or during the main story. He also confirmed that physical copies of Revelation will require an additional download, with the game likely to land around 200 GB.

For players who missed the Tokyo Game Show demo, Siliconera reported that Hamaguchi signalled more demo appearances could follow. "While TGS was the first event where players could experience the game, we hope to provide many more opportunities for fans to try it themselves at gaming events around the world," he said. Siliconera noted a New York Comic Con voice-actor panel on October 8, 2026, and Paris Games Week from October 22 to 25, 2026, as nearby events where the game could appear.

What the demo says about the final chapter

The Tokyo Game Show demo was small, but it showed the shape of the conclusion. Revelation keeps the action-RPG combat of Rebirth while adding FITS to let players re-spec the cast, and it brings Cid and Vincent fully into the playable roster for the first time. For a trilogy that has spent two games building toward Sephiroth, the fact that the demo ends on a Jenova battle and a taunting vision of the villain is a signal about where the final game's attention sits.

IGN's preview reached a similar conclusion about the combat additions, calling Cid and Vincent "fantastic additions to an already great party when it comes to the evolved combat system."

The caveats are the usual ones for a demo. FITS was shown in a limited form, with a fixed outfit and no role-switching during the session, so how deep the customisation runs remains unproven. The story slice was lifted from an early chapter and told little about how Revelation handles the parts of the original game that fans most want to see. And the release is still more than six months away, with two story DLCs to follow after launch.

What to watch is straightforward. Square Enix has said the game will appear at more events, and the next few months bring New York Comic Con and Paris Games Week. Between those, the company has to show more of the systems it introduced at Tokyo Game Show and convince returning players that the finale can land the ending the trilogy has been building since 2020.
