One day later, on Thursday, 5 November 2026, Sony Group Corporation published its Q2 FY2026 financial results for the July-to-September 2026 quarter. Losing a major first-party release from Q4 FY2026 did not lower the division's full-year targets. Sony raised its FY2026 forecast for the Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment after quarterly revenue rose 9% year on year to ¥1.209 trillion and operating income jumped 83% to ¥220.1 billion.
Sony also reported that cumulative PlayStation 5 shipments reached 97.9 million units as of 30 September 2026, PlayStation Network monthly active users hit a September record of 127 million accounts, and Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million copies worldwide as of 4 November 2026.
Three months out of February and out of fiscal 2026
Santa Monica Studio announced the schedule change on 4 November 2026, five months after unveiling God of War Laufey at Sony's June State of Play and five weeks after opening pre-orders on 29 September. The studio gave no technical reason for the delay.
"With this in mind, we've made the decision to delay God of War Laufey's release to May 20th, 2027. We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential." Santa Monica Studio, in a statement published on 4 November 2026.
In the full statement, carried by Gematsu and TechPowerUp, the team thanked fans for their response to Faye's journey since the June reveal and said it did not take their trust for granted. That is standard studio phrasing. Ninety-three days is too short to redesign core systems, though it is enough time to fix bugs and tune encounters before disc pressing.
The calendar effect is clearer. As Eurogamer and Game Informer pointed out, the old 16 February 2027 date sat inside a crowded February window that includes Playground Games' Fable reboot, Atlus's Persona 4 Revival, and 4A Games' Metro 2039. Several publishers have spent the autumn reshuffling 2027 schedules, including FromSoftware's move to push its Switch 2 title into next year, covered in our 30 October report.
Shifting God of War Laufey to Thursday, 20 May 2027, gives Santa Monica Studio a quieter late-spring slot and moves the title out of Q4 FY2026 into Q1 FY2027, which starts on 1 April 2027.
Faye, the Everywhen, and gods outside the Nine Realms
Revealed in June 2026 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive from Santa Monica Studio, God of War Laufey puts Kratos's late wife in the lead role. Across God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022), Faye, known as Laufey the Just, was mostly off screen. Players carried her ashes to the highest peak in the realms in the 2018 game and saw her in flashbacks in Ragnarök, where Deborah Ann Woll portrayed her opposite Christopher Judge's Kratos.
Woll returns as the protagonist. Instead of making a prequel about Faye's Jötunn rebellion against the Æsir, Santa Monica Studio set the game concurrently with God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. The story begins right after Kratos and Atreus cremate Faye's body at the start of the 2018 game. Faye wakes up in the Everywhen.
Santa Monica Studio describes the Everywhen as a transcendent realm that is the birthplace and final destination of magic, and the afterlife for gods across multiple mythologies. From there, Faye fights to protect Kratos and Atreus.
Because the Everywhen gathers gods from beyond Norse myth, the story brings in outside pantheons without sending Kratos to another land. Announced antagonists include Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war, and Begtse, the Mongolian god of war. Faye travels with two companions: Rue and Phranque, a talking jelly cube concept that Cory Barlog had discussed since 2018.
Ariel Lawrence is the game director, working with narrative director Jimmie Myers and lead writer Elize Morgan. The staff writers include Alanah Pearce, Orion Walker, Lauren Signorino, and Jeremy Bernstein. Bear McCreary composes the score.
Physical discs before Sony's 2028 cutoff
When pre-orders went live on 29 September 2026, physical media collectors immediately asked whether the game would ship on disc.
In July 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will stop manufacturing physical PlayStation game discs starting in January 2028. Following that announcement, Santa Monica Studio assured players that God of War Laufey will receive a physical disc release alongside its Standard and Digital Deluxe digital editions. Even after the delay to 20 May 2027, the launch lands roughly seven months before Sony's January 2028 disc cutoff. The standalone £130 Collector Box does not include a copy of the game.
Why Sony raised its full-year forecast anyway
Normally, losing a God of War title from the fourth quarter would force Sony to cut its fiscal-year guidance. On 5 November 2026, Sony raised it instead. The company lifted its full-year FY2026 forecast for the Game & Network Services segment on the strength of network growth and third-party software (GamesIndustry.biz).
Sony's Q2 FY2026 earnings release, covering 1 July to 30 September 2026, reported five key figures for PlayStation:
- Game & Network Services revenue rose 9% year on year to ¥1.209 trillion (1,209.0 billion yen).
- G&NS operating income rose 83% year on year to ¥220.1 billion.
- PlayStation 5 hardware shipments reached 2.6 million units in Q2, down 35% from 4.0 million in Q2 FY2025, taking cumulative lifetime PS5 shipments to 97.9 million units as of 30 September 2026.
- Combined PS4 and PS5 software sales reached 88.2 million units in Q2, up 7.9 million from 80.3 million a year earlier, with full-game digital downloads accounting for 78% of software sales (up from 72% in Q2 FY2025).
- PlayStation Network monthly active users hit a September record of 127 million accounts, up 7% (8 million accounts) year on year, with total playtime up 4%.
Two factors explain why Sony could move God of War Laufey into FY2027 without cutting guidance. First, digital full-game downloads climbed six percentage points in a year to 78%, lifting software margins. Second, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November 2026. Demand ahead of GTA VI was already lifting US console sales in September, as noted in our 25 October report on Circana's retail data. Store commissions, bundles, and PlayStation Plus subscriptions tied to GTA VI will carry Sony's third and fourth quarters.
Marvel's Wolverine hits 2.4 million as first-party carries the fall
Sony's first-party slate also put up solid autumn numbers. In its 5 November disclosures, Sony reported that Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million copies globally as of 4 November 2026, roughly 50 days after its mid-September 2026 launch.
Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yōtei, released in October 2025, reached 3.3 million copies sold. Those totals gave Sony enough first-party revenue across Q2 and Q3 to let Santa Monica Studio take another three months. With Wolverine out in September 2026 and Grand Theft Auto VI arriving in November, Q1 FY2027 needed an anchor title of its own. Now May has one.
Memory prices and FY2027 investment in the next PlayStation
While software and network profits climbed, PlayStation 5 hardware shipments slowed as the console entered its seventh year. Shipping 2.6 million units in Q2 brought lifetime PS5 shipments to 97.9 million through 30 September 2026, leaving the console 2.1 million units shy of 100 million (Engadget).
At the 5 November briefing, Sony CFO Lin Tao said the company had protected hardware profitability against higher memory prices. "With regard to PlayStation hardware, we have been able to offset the rise in memory prices through adjustments to promotions and pricing, as well as additional cost-reduction, and we expect hardware profitability for the current fiscal year to remain on par with the previous fiscal year," Tao said in the earnings speech. She added that Sony has locked in supplier agreements for next fiscal year's memory volume.
Tao also addressed Sony's next-generation console plans. While noting that new PS5 unit sales are "gradually declining as expected at this stage of the console life cycle," she confirmed that R&D on Sony's next-generation PlayStation platform is "progressing as scheduled" (Game Developer).
Tao then pointed to the budget calendar: "From next fiscal year onward, there will be investment in the new platform. For future growth, we have to attach great importance to a new platform and make the necessary investments for that." Formal platform investment ramps up in FY2027, starting 1 April 2027, the same quarter God of War Laufey now ships.
Caveats and what to watch before May 2027
Scope of the delay and financial disclosures
Santa Monica Studio gave no technical detail for the 93-day delay beyond "putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential." The observation that moving from 16 February to 20 May 2027 avoids a crowded February release window (Fable, Persona 4 Revival, Metro 2039) and anchors Q1 FY2027 is industry press analysis (IGN, Eurogamer, Game Informer), not a reason stated by the studio. In Sony's Q2 FY2026 report, the 2.6 million quarterly and 97.9 million lifetime PS5 numbers are hardware shipments (sell-in to retailers) through 30 September 2026, whereas the 2.4 million figure for Marvel's Wolverine is consumer sell-through as of 4 November 2026. Finally, Sony's raised full-year G&NS forecast and FY2027 next-generation platform investment comments are company projections; Sony has not announced a name, specifications, or a release window for its next PlayStation hardware.
Three dates will test Sony's projections before next spring. The first is 19 November 2026, when Grand Theft Auto VI launches, followed by Sony's Q3 FY2026 report in February 2027 confirming whether lifetime PS5 shipments crossed 100 million units.
The second is Santa Monica Studio's next gameplay look at God of War Laufey. Players know the setup of the Everywhen and the names of Sekhmet, Begtse, Phranque, and Rue, but we have not seen an extended combat walkthrough of Faye in action. We'll see when Sony schedules the next State of Play.
The third arrives in May 2027, when Sony closes its FY2026 books, outlines FY2027 R&D spending for its next-generation PlayStation platform, and releases God of War Laufey on 20 May.
